of course you can make one before day 9 but if you don't want to bother with silk before then just wait until day 9. you can do this as soon as you find a swamp and by day 9 (when your beard grows to full size) you can 100% make a top hat with that and by then you won't ever need to go get mushrooms again. i like to do this in my first 10 days with webber because i can pick papyrus as well to get my bird cage going while also knocking out worrying about sanity at all. in one trip if you do it right you'll get at LEAST 10-15 mushrooms that heal sanity very well cooked. they appear over the evening and you can even run around the swamp at night with a torch to get the blue mushrooms as well. The easiest way to get sanity back is to go to a swamp (don't forget that log suit for even a moment) and pick green mushrooms. Monster meat, silk, and glands give you almost everything you need all year round. It feels like Webber can survive any season on just his spider dens. If you have loads of spare silk you can use them to upgrade spider dens (just drop the silk on the den). The spiders will also help you fight hounds and other attackers, even without giving them meat.

Cooked green shrooms give you some decent sanity (and all can be used in crock pot recipes quite effectively). Pay attention to what shrooms you have growing around you. If you have pigs nearby snag an umbrella and really hammer it. Combine with a straw hat or top hat, potentially even standing under trees if really soaked and you have sufficient supplies, while raining. If it's spring time and the rain is what's doing you in, make parasols. Carry 10-15 stacks of glands on you too just in case you take damage (but not 20, so you can pick up more if you find them).

They are made from just silk, so you have an infinite supply (I had many stacks of 20 silks). Wear one when you can (and if you are missing a noticeable amount pick up flowers until you're satisfied). If sanity is your biggest problem, you have an easy solution. This lets you then wade into the center of the fighting and hold space, instantly collecting everything (silk, glands, monster meat) and preventing them from eating the meat. Ideally it will be outside of range of autouse and you will have 3 slots. This will create a spider war (which you are not a part of). Put on a tool, click to attack a non-follower spider outside of attack range, cancel it/remove tool so you don't attack them yourself (but your follower spiders will still go attack).
